POLICE APPLICATIONS
Law enforcement vehicles, in particular, are subject to high-temperature extremes under the hood. Heat is the mortal enemy of the engine and all the components under the hood. Hot air rises, so let it out with patented RunCool® Hood Louvers!
Increase vehicle reliability and performance (both of which are important for law enforcement vehicles) and improve the service life of underhood components with RunCool patented Hood Louvers. Various types of U.S. Border Patrol vehicles use these in the desert, where the temperatures can reach 150°! They want their Agents to be able to run the A/C (especially with K-9 vehicles) when temperatures reach those high levels.
Four Directions Search, Rescue and Recovery in Colorado says, "It is unbelievable how well they work. I would never believe the difference they could make." In fact, testing in conjunction with the Pelion, S.C. Police Department showed our hood louvers lowered under-hood temperatures by 31° -- the difference between a 100° day and a 69° day! And that was with the Standard Flow models. The new Hi-Flow™ models flow 50% more, so heat reduction should be even greater.

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY...
Increase power and gasoline mileage…
"Racers know that a cooler running engine is a better performing engine. Reducing the temperature at which an engine runs will make more power through better thermal and volumetric efficiency."
-- Pace Performance
Improve battery life…
"Chilling cold isn't the hardest environment for batteries; hot temperatures actually cause more damage…heat saps more life over time…increased underhood temperatures in hot weather in especially taxing."
-- Consumer Reports
Extend the life of hoses and belts…
"Rubber hoses can become hard and brittle, deteriorating with age and exposure to heat…Belts also break down with heat."
-- Car Care Council
Proven science…hot air rises!
"Classic rodders punched louvers in their hoods to help radiate heat. The Old Dads knew what they were doing, and the principle is no less valid today."
-- Car Craft Magazine

This dramatization shows how hot air rises – up and out of the hood louvers. The engine compartment is similar to a stove, closed at the top – which, in a stove or a motor vehicle, keeps the heat in. Heat rises – let it out with hood louvers.

Here is a U.S. Border Patrol pick-up truck. The Hood Louvers blend in because they are powder-coated gloss white and the rivets are white. The USBP wanted this low-key look.

In the heat and high humidity of Pelion, S.C., the Police Department tested RunCool Hood Louvers. They found they lowered underhood temperatures by 31°! They used the Fire Department infra-red heat sensing equipment in their test. Then they fitted them to all their vehicles. Chief Chris Garner says, “We are very pleased with the hood louvers”.
